Why the new website?

This website was founded by a group of people who take a close interest in current affairs, justice and society in general. We began noticing how obvious it was that the majority of people in the UK have little or no understanding of how the TV licensing system works. In many cases this can lead to people being prosecuted, fined and sometimes even imprisoned for no more than an honest mistake.

We have a situation where generations of British people have grown up knowing nothing other than the TV licence but have little knowledge of how the system actually works. More recently, the choice of media channels on live TV and the internet has broadened dramatically. This has created a situation where more and more people are deciding to cancel their TV licence in favour of the many new channels offering on-demand content, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+.

This website is not an alternative to the TV Licensing website. It is an information service mainly for people who believe they do not legally require a TV licence.

Problems with TV licensing law

The law on TV licensing is complex. It can be confusing at times and difficult for many to understand fully. Many believe it to be unfair that they need a licence to watch any live TV, including ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 when a very large proportion of the money raised through the TV licence is paid to the BBC.

As the law stands, it is illegal for a person to watch any live TV or BBC iPlayer without a TV licence. Despite this though, many people are willing to do without live TV and BBC iPlayer and simply view on-demand content only on the many available channels delivered via the internet.

Much information is already available on the TV Licensing website but many people tell us they do not find the way the website is structured and worded in places to be very helpful. Our aim is to respond to the many common questions we see people asking and provide detailed information that will help them to fully understand the rules.

We want to help ensure that people know their legal rights as citizens and what they can and cannot view or record depending on whether or not they have a TV licence. We are here to provide an information service for honest, law abiding people and we never suggest that anybody breaks the law.

Why the name?

We have seen over many few years that a lot of bad advice is given out on social media about how the TV licence works. Often such advice is provided by excitable individuals with very little knowledge of the law or how TV licensing actually works. We included the term “Bible” in the website name as a way of saying that we are a reliable and trustworthy source of well researched and accurate information on the TV licence.

We take an inclusive approach. We don’t care about your age, where you’re from or your political opinions. If you want to know more about the TV licence then we are here to help in providing more information.

Are we a political group and how are we funded?

Like all people, our website team members have their own individual political opinions. However, we are primarily an information website and try to avoid giving political opinions in among the information we provide on how the TV licence works. Our blog articles tend to feature a range of issues and opinions and we large try to focus on the facts, rather than primarily politics.

We are all volunteers and so far we have been self-funding. We put a lot of our own time into research and keeping the website up to date. We hope to continue providing our information service for as long as people need it. We are currently looking for sponsors.
